OTTAWA, Ontario - On Wednesday night the CIS unveiled the major award winners for 2012 and Fury W-League defender Gillian Baggott continued to add to her hardware collection for the year, winning the Chantal Navert Memorial Award as CIS Player of the Year.
Baggott, who also earned OUA East Player of the Year honours last week, was also named to the CIS All-Canadian Team as was another former Fury W-League defender, Bahar Sansar. For the second consecutive year the CIS Female Player of the Year comes from the Fury W-League squad as Alyssa Lagoina (Laurier) was last year’s recipient.
The past six months has seen Baggott play some of the best soccer in her life. During the summer the Ottawa native helped the Ottawa Fury Women capture, at long last, their first W-League Championship, proving dominant at both ends of the pitch, especially on set pieces for which opposing defenders had little answer for her aerial prowess.
This past fall, Baggott’s strong play continued helping the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees to an unbeaten regular season, the best defense in the country (surrendering 1 goal all season) and the #1 ranking in the CIS. The graduate of the Fury Youth Academy also finished in the top 10 in OUA scoring in her fifth year and, like any great captain, always led by example both on and off the field.
Baggott will wrap up her stellar university career at this week’s CIS championship. She played one season at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla., in 2007 before transferring to uOttawa and suiting up for the Gee-Gees for the past four campaigns.
