TUCSON, Ariz. -- The San Diego Toreros continued their winning ways in the West Coast Conference, thanks in part to FC Tucson's Eli Galbraith-Knapp, who helped the side claim a pair of wins last week. The midfielder, who made 10 appearences for FC Tucson in its inaugural season in the PDL this summer, bagged his third goal of the season for the Toreros to help extend the side's winning streak to seven and move them to the top of the WCC standings.
On Wednesday night, San Diego defeated Loyola Marymount 1-0 in a match that midfielders Galbraith-Knapp and James Cohn started but didn’t score. Then on Friday San Diego slayed San Francisco 2-1 thanks to Galbraith-Knapp, who blasted the game-winning goal from 30 yards out in the 86th minute. Cohn also started but didn’t record a point.
How did FC Tucson's other players fare this weekend? Check out the capsules below.
New Mexico
The Lobos had plenty of reason to celebrate this weekend. Not only did the team sweep its two matches, but New Mexico also clinched the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season title. On Friday, October 26, the Lobos shut out San Jose State 1-0. Defender Travis Campbell started and played all 90 minutes. Then on Sunday, October 28, New Mexico shut out Seattle University 3-0 to clinch the conference regular season title. The Lobos have now shut out five consecutive opponents and seven of their last eight.
Portland
In front of a nationally televised audience on Fox Soccer Channel, the Pilots defeated Santa Clara in a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime win on Friday night. Midfielder Thomas Iwasaki started the match while fellow midfielder Colin Anderson came off the bench but neither notched a point. Portland followed up its big win with a tough-break 3-2 loss to Saint Mary’s on Sunday. Thomas started again while Anderson came off the bench, but again neither made the score sheet.
Sacramento State
The Hornets’ lone match this weekend turned out to be a big one after the team defeated Cal Poly 3-2 on Saturday night. Forward Max Alvarez and defender Matt Linenberger both started and Alvarez scored Sacramento State’s second goal of the match thanks to a 49th-minute penalty kick. The win keeps the Hornets in the race for the Big West North Division title. Sacramento State currently sits in second place with 16 points, trailing UC Davis (18).
San Francisco
The Dons couldn’t pick up a win over the weekend. On Friday night, San Francisco fell to red-hot San Diego, 2-1. Then on Sunday the Dons drew with Loyola Marymount 1-1. Goalkeeper Brendan Roslund started both matches and made a total of eight saves over the weekend. Defender Danny Kirkland came off the bench as a substitute in both matches.
Santa Clara
The Broncos dropped from first to second place in the West Coast Conference after splitting their weekend matches. On Friday night, in front of a national television audience on Fox Soccer Channel, Santa Clara lost a heart-breaking 2-1 match in double-overtime. Forward Carlos Montes and defender Wes Culver started but neither scored. The Broncos bounced back on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Gonzaga. Culver started again while Montes came off the bench.
UC Riverside
There was just one match this weekend for the Highlanders but UC Riverside fell to Cal State Northridge 2-1 on Saturday. Midfielder Aaron Long started and played 83 minutes but did not score.
UNLV
UNLV got off to a great start over the weekend thanks to a 3-2 upset win over then-first place Air Force on Friday night. Forward Nick Marshall started the match and even though he didn’t record a point, his head coach credited Marshall’s attacking pace as one reason why the Air Force defense struggled with the Rebels. Sunday’s match, however, did not go as well as UNLV fell to Denver 3-0, with Marshall again in the starting line-up.
Cal State San Bernardino
The Coyotes split their final two matches of the season. On Friday the team suffered a back-breaking 1-0 loss to Cal State Monterey after giving up the game-winning goal with less than two seconds remaining in double overtime. Forward Ricardo Velasco started the match and couldn’t convert a penalty kick in the first overtime. But Velasco and the Coyotes bounced back on Sunday in a 3-0 win over Cal State East Bay to finish out the season. Velasco scored the team’s second goal of the day in the 81st minute.
Yavapai Community College
The Roughriders won their 20th and 21st matches of the season en route to a NJCAA Regional Championship over the weekend. Yavapai will now travel to Wyoming on November 2 for a chance to win the NJCAA West District and qualify for the NJCAA National Tournament in Albany, Georgia. The Roughriders feature forward Junior Gbapou, who did not appear on the score sheet.
