TAMPA, Fla. – Seattle Sounders Women forward Lyndsay Elston earned the nod as Pac-12 Player of the Week this week after she scored a pair of goals, including a game-winner, and added two assists for the Washington Huskies in wins against LaSalle and Fresno State.
In the Huskies’ home-opener on Friday, Elston scored the go-ahead goal in the fourth minute and assisted on an insurance goal in the 82nd minute to help secure a 2-0 win against La Salle. She added a goal and an assist in a 3-1 victory against Fresno State on Sunday. Elston, who helped the Sounders Women to the W-League postseason in 2012, was just one of the current or former W-League players to be honored for their collegiate performances.
Long Island Rough Riders standout Kim DeCesare was honored by Top Drawer Soccer for the second time this season, being named to the TDS Team of the Week after she scored three times in a pair of victories for the Duke Blue Devils. Former Kalamazoo Outrage standout Annie Steinlage was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after she scored a goal, added an assist and helped limit Akron to one shot on goal in Michigan State’s 2-1 victory against the Zips. It was the first weekly honor of her career for the junior defender.
Marist senior goalkeeper Caitlin Landsman, a 2011 member of the Northern Virginia Majestics, was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week after she made six saves in a 1-0 shutout on the road at Fordham.
The Sun Belt Conference honored former Fort Wayne Fever standout Paige Goeglein as Offensive Player of the Week after the Middle Tennessee senior led her squad against in-state foes Vanderbilt and East Tennessee State. Goeglein racked up a goal and two assists as MT routed ETSU 7-1. She leads the high-octane Blue Raider offense this season with 10 points (4 goals and 2 assists) in five matches.
Former New York Magic goalkeeper Sandita McDermott was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week after the Bucknell senior picked up a pair of shutouts last week, a 1-0 decision Friday against Buffalo followed by a 3-0 clean sheet Sunday at St. Bonaventure. She made a season-high six saves against the Bonnies.
Carmelina Puopolo of Saint Rose set single-game school records with 10 points and four assists during Thursday’s 10-0 season-opening victory at NYIT to earn Northeast-10 Player of the Week honors. The former Toronto Lady Lynx player scored three goals, two in the first half.
