FULLERTON, Calif. – The Los Angeles Blues are proud to announce they will take on defending Guatemalan champions Club Xelajù MC in a high-profile international exhibition on Sunday, September 9, 2012, at East Los Angeles College in Monterrey Park. Tickets for the 4 p.m. PT clash are $20 and may be purchased by calling 714-738-8011 or by visiting www.ticketon.com.
Xelajù, which has won the most domestic titles of all Guatemalan teams outside the capital city, is coming fresh off a 1-0 victory over Mexican heavyweight Guadalajara in the CONCACAF Champions League, having earned a berth in the prestigious tournament by winning their fifth Guatemalan crown earlier this year.
The club features an exquisite list of offensive weapons, including current Guatemalan national team forwards Edwin Villatoro and Carlos Villa, one current and one former Costa Rican international in Alejandro Alpízar and Allan Alemán, as well as prolific Brazilian goal-scorer Israel Silva. The 31-year-old rejoined the “Superchivos” in 2010 after tallying 23 times in 44 matches with Kerkyra FC and helping the Greek outfit win promotion to the country’s top flight.
While the attack is Xelajù’s greatest strength, the side also boasts a stingy defense led by two current Guatemalan internationals in holding midfielder Manuel León and goalkeeping legend Ricardo Trigueño, as well as by former Guatemala defender Nelson Morales.
Today’s stars follow in the footsteps of many famous Xelajù players before them, the most legendary being Mario Camposeco, who was the team captain in the 1940s and guided the side to 10 consecutive titles in the Quetzaltenango Department before tragically dying in a plane crash in 1951. In honor of the attacker, the name of the club, which was founded as “Germania” in 1928 and was subsequently renamed “ADIX,” was changed once again to “Club Xelajù Mario Camposeco.”
Tickets for the September 9 match between the Blues and the history-rich Guatemalan outfit are $20 and are available starting immediately. They may be purchased by calling 714-738-8011 or by visiting www.ticketon.com. Spanish-language information is available at 213-925-9072.
