TUCSON, Az. — Over the weekend, 14 FC Tucson players representing 10 different schools kicked off their 2012 college seasons. And no opener was bigger than in Los Angeles where Travis Campbell helped No. 6 New Mexico topple No. 2 UCLA, 3-2, on Friday night. Campbell started along the back line and played the full 90 minutes.

University of San Francisco
Goalkeeper Brandon Roslund bounced back from a tough 1-0 loss to Stanford on Friday by earning his first win and shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over San Jose State on Sunday. Roslund made two saves in the winning effort. Even in the Dons’ loss to Stanford, Roslund stopped five shots.
His teammate, midfielder Danny Kirkland, saw action against Stanford, starting the match and playing 61 minutes while notching one shot on goal.
University of San Diego
Goalkeeper Michael D’Arrigo made three saves in a tough-luck 2-0 season opening loss to No. 13 UC Irvine. The box score from the game was not posted and the numbers on D’Arrigo’s teammates, James Cohn and Eli Galbraith-Knapp are unknown.
Santa Clara
The Broncos couldn’t repeat history, dropping its season opener to California, 2-1, on Friday night. (Santa Clara beat the Bears last season 4-2). Both defender Wes Culver and forward Carlos Montes started for the Broncos with Culver playing the full 90 minutes and Montes being subbed out after 75 minutes. Culver took one shot during the game.
UC Riverside
The Highlanders began the season with back-to-back shut out wins. The first was a 3-0 win over Marist on Friday night. Midfielder Aaron Long started that game and scored UC Riverside’s third and final goal of the match. On Sunday, Long started his team’s second match, but his lone shot didn’t find the back of the net in the Highlanders’ 1-0 win over Iona College.
Sacramento State
The Hornets didn’t have the start they would’ve liked in a 4-0 loss to Oregon State, but forward Max Alvarez shined with three of his four shots on frame. Alvarez, who started the game, was the only player to take a shot on goal for Sacramento State. His teammate, defender Matt Linenburger, also started and played a full 90 minutes.
Portland
The Pilots opened the year with a 4-0 loss to Cal State Northridge on Friday night. Then Portland rebounded with a 4-0 win over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. No stats were posted for the Pilots’ season opener, but midfielder Colin Anderson scored Portland’s first goal of the season 12 minutes into its second match. Teammate Thomas Iwasaki also started the second match and took two shots during the game.
Denver
Midfielder Reid Hukari finally got back onto the pitch after sitting out a season following a transfer from UCLA. Hukari started in Denver’s tough 2-1 double-overtime loss to No. 5 UNC Charlotte. Hukari played 92 minutes and took one of his team’s three shots during the game.
