Super Y-League Feature
Friday, August 10, 2012
Youth players across North America have been competing throughout the summer for the right to represent their club at the 2012 Super Y-League Finals this December. Many teams have already clinched spots in their respective divisions, but there are still plenty of openings for battle-tested teams. This weekend, spots can be clinched in multiple divisions and age groups, from U12 to U16.
Mid Atlantic U12 Boys
Washington FC and the Long Island Rough Riders will face each other on Saturday to fight for the final bid allotted to the division. If the Rough Riders win, the spot is theirs. Washington needs to beat Long Island and also defeat the Brooklyn Knights on Sunday to clinch.
Mid Atlantic U13 Boys
Five games are to be played this weekend in this Mid Atlantic age group, with various scenarios as to who can clinch one of the final four spots from the division. Real Maryland F.C.’s final game of the season is on Saturday against the Brooklyn Knights, and a win will give Real a berth. The Long Island Rough Riders have two chances to clinch a spot, with a game on Saturday against Washington FC and a game on Sunday against Central Jersey Spartans. The Rough Riders can clinch with a single win from the two games.
With 29 points, Match Fit Chelsea can only hope that Real Maryland’s result is in their favor. Anything but a win for Real clinches a spot for Match Fit.
Southeast U13 Boys
A busy few days for the Southeast this weekend, too, as FC America plays in three of the division’s five games, beginning Friday night against West Pines United. FC America is fighting for the Group A spot in the division and, with three wins out of three, the top spot will go to the central Florida club. Kendall SC, FC America’s opponent on Saturday, is in a safe position atop Group B and does not need any help to clinch its own berth.
Orlando City Youth Soccer needs to win its match against VSI West Florida Flames on Saturday and receive help from FC America’s opponents to have a chance at qualifying. Even a single FC America loss this weekend would be beneficial to Orlando, who can only reach a maximum of 22 points.
Southeast U13 Girls
The FC America girls also have the opportunity to clinch the second of two bids for the division this weekend, but only have one game in which to do it. FC America only needs one point from its game against West Pines United on Sunday to qualify. For United, which also plays FC United of Florida on Saturday, two wins will nullify FC America’s chance and place West Pines in the pole position leading up to next weekend’s game.
In another twist, Orlando City Youth Soccer can stay in the race with a win and two West Pines United wins this weekend, followed by another West Pines win next weekend. Orlando City, FC America, and West Pines would each be tied with 12 points at the end of the season should that happen, causing a three-way tiebreaker scenario.
Mid Atlantic U15 Boys
The final game of the season takes place on Sunday between Real Maryland F.C. and the Brooklyn Knights. Brooklyn is out of contention for the final division berth while Real Maryland can seal the deal with a win or draw. Princeton Soccer Academy is currently tied on points with Real, but would lose the tiebreaker because of its 1-0 loss to the Maryland club on the first day of the season back in June.
New England U16 Boys
The Ottawa Fury and Lightning Soccer Club will contest the only available New England berth twice this weekend. One game on Saturday and another on Sunday will both be played at Algonquin College in Ottawa, and a home team victory in one of the games will give Ottawa the division championship. Two wins for Lightning, however, will give the visitors from New Hampshire the crown and spot at IMG Academy this December.
