CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery faces league-leading Orlando City on Thursday night at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6 p.m. with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. The Battery (11-6) enter the game in second place in the USL PRO standings, but are 10 points behind Orlando (13-1-4). The game against Orlando will be broadcast live on 1340 AM with the pre-match build-up starting at 7:15 p.m.
Charleston has played one game fewer than Orlando City and the Battery’s next two games are against Orlando, giving Mike Anhaeuser's side a chance to close the gap at the top of the standings as the regular season enters the home stretch.
Charleston defeated the Wilmington Hammerheads 3-1 in its last match on Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium. Navion Boyd, Dane Kelly and Nicki Paterson all tallied to lead Charleston over the Hammerheads. Paterson’s goal was his ninth of the season; he leads USL PRO in goals scored (9) and points (20).
Orlando has enjoyed a tremendous season so far; in addition to being undefeated at home they have lost just one game all season. Orlando and Charleston share the best defensive records in USL PRO; both teams have conceded just 13 goals.
Orlando’s offense is led by second year forward Dennis Chin, who has scored eight goals in 18 games, putting him just one behind Paterson in the race for the Golden Boot.
This is the second of three games the teams will play this year. Orlando edged Charleston 2-1 back on June 9 in a game played at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. The teams will meet for the final time in the regular season next Friday night in Orlando (7:30 p.m./1340 AM).
