CLEARWATER, Fla. – Two of December’s National Champions repeated their Clearwater performances this weekend as Florida Beach Soccer FC in the Men’s division and Peace Passers of the Women’s division each won first place at Major Beach Soccer Clearwater Beach on Sunday, following victories on the same beach last winter.
The Peace Passers defeated Lakeland Reality in the Women’s Open final after a four-game unbeaten run in group play. The team that will represent the United States at 2012 Beach Soccer Montreal showed why they were selected with an exciting attack and rock-solid defense throughout the tournament.
Florida Beach Soccer FC almost missed out on the Men’s Open final edging past Team Calvary Chapel in the semifinal round. The reigning champions scored off of a beautifully executed volley with a minute remaining in the extra period to advance to the final.
The U18 Men’s final was a rematch of last month’s Daytona Beach event, as the Ocala Sand Pirates defended their title and defeated IABS in what was a very competitive, physical contest. Each team’s goalkeeper had to be taken off the field at different points in the game due to injury, but would reenter to finish out the contest.
The Spicy Latinos defeated the Beach Babes in the U18 Women’s final, while Lakeland United won the Co-Ed division and Team Bud Soccer Dogs won the Co-Ed Over-30 division. WFP and the Goal Diggers won the U16 Men’s and Women’s divisions, respectively. The Goal Diggers also won their division in Daytona last month.
Not A Chance came out on top of the Mudd Dawgs in the U14 Boys age group and the Landsharks used their large fan base to propel them to the U14 Girls crown.
“The teams and their fans were great this weekend,” USL National Technical Director Peter Mellor said. “The fans were given the opportunity to witness some great individual and team performances as beach soccer continues to grow. It’s exciting to think about going to Fort Myers in just a few weeks after the success we’ve had here in Clearwater and in Daytona.”
MBS Fort Myers takes place August 4-5 and will offer another opportunity for teams hoping to qualify for the National Championships in Clearwater in December.
