HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Harrisburg City Islanders are proud to announce the signings of forward Jose Angulo, forward Jordan Seabrook, midfielder Drew Yates, and forward Andrew Welker. The four new arrivals will round out the City Islanders' roster as the 2011 season of USL PRO gets underway.
Angulo turned pro right out of high school after an impressive career at national powerhouse St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, New Jersey. It was at St. Benedict's that Angulo first teamed up with current Islanders midfielder Nelson Becerra. During his high school career, he was a Parade All-American and was considered by many college coaches to be one of the top high school players in the country. After pursuing opportunities with MLS clubs and in Europe, Angulo made one appearance for the Newark Ironbound Express of the PDL in 2009. He played the following season with the PDL's Central Jersey Spartans (again, teaming up with Becerra) where he netted 10 goals on the season. Angulo's skill in the attack will provide the City Islanders with another goal-scoring threat.
Seabrook, the third former Crystal Palace Baltimore player to sign with Harrisburg this season (joining Andrew Marshall and Stephen Basso), comes to the Islanders after stints in PDL and USL-2. The pacy forward had an outstanding college career at the University of South Florida, registering a total of 31 goals and 25 assists. His exploits at USF brought him attention from MLS teams, and he was selected 51st overall in the 2009 MLS Superdraft by the Colorado Rapids. Seabrook's speed and scoring touch will help strengthen an impressive looking Harrisburg frontline.
"We're very excited to be adding these guys to our roster for 2011," head coach Bill Becher said. "Jordan brings experience and pace to our forward line, while Jose will add to our attack with his strength and power."
Yates, comes to the team after his first year of playing professional soccer. Yates spent last season with FC Tampa Bay of USSF Division 2-Pro League after being drafted 29th overall by the Chicago Fire in the 2010 MLS Superdraft, followed by a brief trial with D.C. United. In college, the strong, steady midfielder had an excellent career at the University of Maryland where he was teammates with another recent Islanders' acquisition, Jason Herrick. From 2006-2009, Yates was the picture of consistency for Maryland, appearing in every match for the Terrapins, while tallying 14 goals and 13 assists. His vision and ability to read the game will make him a solid addition to the Islanders' midfield.
"Drew is an attack-minded midfielder who had the ability to break down opposing defenses off the dribble," Becher said about the young Maryland native. "He will be a threat to score goals, as well as set them up."
Welker, the final addition to the City Islanders' squad before the opener, is entering his rookie season of professional soccer in 2011. A local product from Mechanicsburg, PA, Welker played his high school ball at Cumberland Valley, where he was named the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division Player of the Year his senior year. From there, he enjoyed a solid college career at Seton Hall University. Over his four years, Welker played in 64 games for the Pirates, starting in 59 of those games. He struck a total of 15 goals and assisted on six more during his career, earning All-District honors as both a junior and a senior. Predominantly a forward, Welker also played in the midfield and in defense during his four years with Seton Hall, making him an extremely versatile asset for the City Islanders in 2011.
"Andrew is yet another local standout who will be a great addition to our roster," Becher said. "As well as playing up front, he can play anywhere across the backline or in the midfield."
With these final add-ons to the Islanders cast, the roster appears to be complete and ready to rock in 2011. A combination of youth and experience will make the City Islanders a force to be reckoned with as USL PRO kicks off its new season.
