VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The Virginia Beach Piranhas will try to punch their ticket to the postseason in a matchup with Eastern Conference leading D.C. United Women on Saturday, July 14. The Piranhas currently sit in second place in the Atlantic Division with 18 points, just one point above the FASA Impact.
On Sunday night, a match between Virginia Beach and the Impact was cancelled due to inclement weather. With major playoff implications on the line, a make-up date has not been determined.
The Piranhas (5-2-3) will close out the 2012 campaign just like they started the season, with games against Fredericksburg and D.C. In those games, the Piranhas scored only one goal and had to regroup in order to turn around the season. Since that point, Virginia Beach has yet to lose another game, amassing five wins and three ties; including draws against these same two opponents.
When D.C. (10-0-1) visits the Sportsplex on Saturday, they will look to avenge their only tie of the year. When the Piranhas visited D.C. on June 23rd, the D.C. United Women were undefeated and had not given up a goal at home. Jamie Clarke ended both of those streaks scoring in the sixth minute. Piranhas goalkeeper Marbel Egwuenu held off the high-powered D.C. United offense to secure the 1-1 tie.
Now, the Piranhas will look to repeat that impressive performance and remain unbeaten at home.
Virginia Beach is led by leading scorers Esther Anyanwu and Taylor Mertz. Mertz is coming off an amazing performance against the Northern Virginia Majestics last Saturday. Mertz’s two goals in the final 12 minutes led the Piranhas to the win and kept the team alive in the playoff race.
Kickoff for the final Piranhas home game of the season is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
