OCEAN CITY, N.J. -- The Ocean City Nor’easters are looking to extend their winning streak to seven games as they start a home doubleheader this weekend against the New Jersey Rangers at Carey Stadium on Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Rangers franchise began in 2008 and it was the Ocean City Nor’easters who handed the Rangers their first defeat. Since then, the Nor’easters have a 7-1-1 record against Rangers with a goal difference of 28-8. The 2009 Nor’easters’ victory against the Rangers clinched the playoff berth before going onto the PDL quarterfinals finally losing to the Chicago Fire PDL. The Nor’easters are hoping to continue their dominance over the Denville, N.J. natives as they push for the postseason.
The two teams have met once already this season and that saw a 5-0 win for the Nor’easters one the road. The game back on May 30th saw a Zoncher Dennis hat trick and two goals for Frank Tweneboa as well as an unlikely assist for goalkeeper John McCarthy. This game promises to be a tougher challenge as the Rangers have recovered from the tough start and are in fourth position harboring hopes of playoff places themselves.
"The NJ Rangers have been on a roll and crept up the table," Nor’easters coach Tim Oswald said. "They are still in playoff contention and surely will come to the Beach House looking to prove they are better than the team we beat 5-0 early in the season. I am sure they have tweaked some things and they have added some quality players to the roster since mid-season.
"I expect this match to be much tighter and closer, but in order to be a playoff team, these are the games we must win."
The Nor’easters conclude the doubleheader with an exciting showdown against the Westchester Flames on Sunday night at 7 p.m. that could see Ocean City clinch a playoff berth.
