SANTA CLARITA, CA
– On an extremely warm Fourth of July afternoon, the Santa Clarita Blue Heat came close to earning their fourth win of the season but were forced to settle for a 1-1 tie with the visiting Colorado Rush. An own goal in the 76th minute canceled out Ana Borges' strike for the Blue Heat eight minutes prior.

The Blue Heat came out strong, dominating a good portion of the match, taking 15 shots to seven by the Rush.  However, neither side could find the breakthrough in the first half. The Blue Heat continued pressing forward and were rewarded in the 68th minute. Edite Fernandes played a through ball to a sprinting Ana Borges who slotted home for Santa Clarita.

The lead would not hold long.

Just eight minutes later, the Rush's Gabbie Miranda sent a corner kick into the box, which deflected off of a Blue Heat defender and into the goal.

After the Rush evened the game Santa Clarita searched desperately for the winning goal but the Colorado defense held firm to close out the match.

“Our team was much more compact and organized today and the possession game was much better,” said Blue Heat Head Coach Charles Martinez. “The own goal was unfortunate for us and we missed several great opportunities to get the ball in the net but overall, I am very pleased with today’s performance.”

The Blue Heat’s next match is against the visiting Colorado Rapids Women this  Saturday, July 7 at 7 p.m. ET at Valencia High School.  Visit www.SCBlueHeat.com or the Blue Heat Facebook page at www.facebook.com/scblueheat for schedules, photos, highlights and ticket information.
