LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The New Jersey Wildcats (4-2-2, 14 points) will host the New York Magic (2-4-1, 7 points) at Saint John Vianney High School in Holmdel on Saturday, with the 4 p.m. match bearing crucial implications on the team's bid for the 2012 Northeast Division crown. With just more than two weeks remaining in the W-League regular season, three clubs are currently separated by just four points atop the division table.
"We have to make sure we don't get caught looking forward," Wildcats head coach Jim Gabarra remarked. "Every game has a lot of meaning for us the rest of the way, and we cannot allow ourselves to have any kind of letdown right now. The tightness of the division, along with having Long Island and the Valkyries ahead of us, makes it critical that we pick up three points this weekend."
Long Island currently sits in first place in the division with 18 points in nine matches, while the Valkyries are in the second slot with 16 points in eight contests. Both clubs play this weekend, as Long Island hosts the New Jersey Rangers (1-7-0, 3 points) on Saturday, and the Valkyries travel to the Magic on Sunday.
"Everyone understands how important the remaining games are, and this kind of challenge brings out the best in everybody as players," Gabarra continued. "It is very important that we come out sharp on Saturday and play a solid 90 minutes."
This contest marks the second meeting between the Wildcats and New York this year, with the first match occurring over the opening weekend of the season. In that game, the Magic took a lead in the 59th minute off a Rashidah Sherman notch, but the Wildcats responded later in the second half with a Kristen Edmonds to Andrea Lopez goal to hang what would be the final score, 1-1.
