Northern Virginia Majestics News Release - www.novafc.org

MANASSAS, VA
– For most of Tuesday night, the Northern Virginia Majestics defense fought valiantly to contain a relentless attack from D.C. United Women.  Despite the effort from the back line and some heroics from Majestic’s goalkeeper Emma Kruse, DC United eventually broke free to score two goals in the waning minutes to earn the season sweep of Northern Virginia.

Under near perfect weather conditions, the Tuesday night crowd saw D.C. United waste little time in storming the Northern Virginia defense. The majority of the first half played out on the Majestics’ end as United registered a 13-0 shot margin in the initial 45 minutes. However, tight defending kept less than half of those shots on target and the athletic Kruse came up big saving the remaining six on frame.

With the match still scoreless well into the second half, the Majestics nearly broke the deadlock in the 65th minute when Northern Virginia forward Sahar Aflaki flicked a looping pass over United goalkeeper Danielle DeLisle.  With the ball headed toward the net, a United defender just managed to clear it away off the goal line to keep the score at 0-0.

D.C. United Women substitute Maddy Brown finally got the visitors on the scoreboard in the 74th minute by powering home a low, driven cross from teammate Hayley Siegel.  Eight minutes later Brown fed a ball to forward Ashley Herndon who neatly tucked in a finish to earn the 2-0 United victory.

The Majestics hit the road to face the Dayton Dutch Lions twice over the weekend, playing both Friday night and Sunday afternoon.  Northern Virginia returns home the following Saturday, July 7th with a game against the Virginia Beach Piranhas.  Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Hellwig Memorial Park in Manassas, Virginia.
