CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- For the first time in 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play, the Charlotte Eagles will take on a team not based in Texas. After a 3-0 run in Open Cup play the Eagles will take on Major League Soccer's CD Chivas USA on Tuesday night at Fullerton's Titan Stadium at 10:30 p.m. ET.
In the midst of a tough USL PRO season, the Eagles have found strength in Open Cup play. After their first home victory of the 2012 season just a week ago against the Richmond Kickers, and a weekend off that has allowed the team to rest, the Eagles will focus their attention back on the national tournament.
The Eagles face Chivas USA, a team dealing with much of the same issues the Eagles face in 2012. Sitting in seventh place in the Western Conference of MLS, Chivas USA is struggling a bit to put together any kind of positive streaks. In their most recent outing, the Goats played to a 0-0 draw against FC Dallas on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center.
Tuesday's contest will mark the first time the Eagles have reached the quarterfinals of the Open Cup, with their previous best a run to the third round in 2005. After defeating FC Dallas and the San Antonio Scorpions, however, the Eagles are hopeful of extending their run in this year's competition.
Following Tuesday night's contest, the Eagles will return home to host the Los Angeles Blues on Thursday night at Charlotte Christian Stadium at 7 p.m. in a USL PRO regular season contest. To purchase tickets visit www.charlotteeagles.com. For group sales please call 704-841-8644x27.
