PDL News Release

Thursday, June 21, 2012

TAMPA, Fla. – The PDL announced its Team of the Week for the seventh week of the 2012 season today, honoring Kitsap Pumas midfielder Matt Friesen as Player of the Week after he scored three goals in two games, leading his side to a pair of victories and first place in the Northwest Division.

Friesen, who currently sits tied for third on the PDL’s goal-scoring charts, scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Pumas’ 3-0 victory against the Sounders FC U23 on Friday night, converting from the penalty spot after a handball in the area in the 13th minute.

The following night against the Fraser Valley Mariners Friesen again struck early, and once again it would prove to be the game-winner. Intercepting a pass, Friesen controlled and then fired past the goalkeeper at the near post. He added to his tally late on as the Pumas wrapped up a 3-0 victory, scoring with eight minutes remaining for his seventh goal of the season.

Joining Friesen on the Team of the Week is Ottawa’s Will Beauge, who earned his second consecutive appearance with three goals as the Fury took four points from a pair of games this past weekend to remain in top spot in the Northeast Division. Beauge, who recently became the all-time appearances leader for the Fury, scored a stoppage-time game-winner against the Boston Victory on Saturday night. He then had both goals as the Fury earned a 2-2 draw against the Worcester Hydra, giving him seven goals this season.

Other standout performances came from Real Maryland’s Aboucarim Ndaw, who had two goals and an assist as the Monarchs took a 5-0 win against the Virginia Beach Piranhas on Sunday evening, while Laredo’s Juan de Dios Ibarra led his side to the top of the Mid South Division with a pair of goals in their two victories against the Texas Dutch Lions and El Paso Patriots.

Baltimore’s Christian Barreiro was selected after leading the Bohemians to their first PDL victory in club history on Saturday night as he recorded a pair of assists, and he was joined in midfield by Ocean City’s Alec Golini, who had both goals as the Nor’easters continued their pursuit of the playoffs with a 2-1 victory on the road against the Bermuda Hogges.

The Ogden Outlaws’ K.C. John earned the goalkeeping honors, recording a seven-save shutout as his side moved into third place in the Southwest Division with a 2-0 victory against the Orange County Blue Star, and he was joined in defense by Carolina’s Clement Simonin, who helped the Dynamo record a pair of shutout victories against the Nashville Metros and Southern West Virginia King’s Warriors.

Vancouver’s James Farenhorst and Jersey’s Chrisopher Lebo also took defensive berths as Farenhorst had a goal and helped the Whitecaps FC U-23 shut out the Washington Crossfire on Friday night, while Lebo played a key role as the Express moved into first place in the Mid Atlantic Division with a 2-0 win against Reading United.

The PDL season continues this weekend with 41 games scheduled from Friday through Sunday. Highlighting the schedule is the Cascadia clash between the Portland Timbers U-23s and Sounders FC U23 on Friday night, as the two PDL clubs meet two days before their MLS counterparts engage on the national stage.

Elsewhere, the Des Moines Menace travel to face the Thunder Bay Chill and the Springfield Demize visit the Real Colorado Foxes, with both series’ seeing a pair of games that could greatly shape the Heartland Division playoff picture. Elsewhere, the Orange County Blue Star will visit FC Tucson as they try to get back in the Southwest Division’s playoff race and the West Virginia Chaos visit the Carolina Dynamo in a key South Atlantic Division clash.

Stay up to date with all of the action through the PDL’s Twitter feed and Facebook page, which will provide nightly updates of scores from across North America, and links to news, previews and game reports.
