W-League News Release

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

TAMPA, Fla. – The W-League announced its Team of the Week for Week 6 of the 2012 season today, honoring D.C. United Women forward Mikaela Howell as Player of the Week. Howell, who currently sits second in the league in goals (7) and points (19) and leads the league in assists (5), recorded her first W-League hat-trick in D.C. United’s victory against Northern Virginia.

A model of consistency, Howell has earned a spot on the W-League Team of the Week for five consecutive weeks. Also earning spots and receiving strong consideration for Player of the Week were Seattle Sounders Women midfielder Veronica Perez and North Jersey Valkyries forward Danielle Schulmann, who also recorded hat-tricks this past week. Rounding out the forwards is Vancouver’s Mele French, who found the net twice in her squad’s 3-1 victory against the LA Strikers.

Midfielder Kaila Sciascia of the Long Island Rough Riders scored perhaps the most important goal of the week, as her 64th-minute strike gave Long Island a 1-0 victory against the New Jersey Wildcats, vaulting the Rough Riders to the top of the Northeast Division. On defense, Seattle’s Stephanie Cox made her second consecutive TOW appearance after recording two assists in a shutout win, while Toronto’s Jade Kovacevic also had two assists that led to a 3-1 victory against Quebec City. In goal, Fredericksburg’s Melissa Pacheco got the nod after her 10 saves helped the Impact hold on for an important 0-0 tie on the road at Virginia Beach.
