WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads have officially announced that midfielder Mark Briggs will now be upholding the Assistant Coach position along with his player responsibilities. The current midfielder is also a former 2009 Hammerhead, thus having a proficient background with the organization.
“It's a great first step onto the coaching ladder for me,” said Briggs. “It’s a very proud moment for me personally to be announced Player/Assistant Coach to a squad and organization I'm very honored to be a part of.”
Looking back to when Briggs, also known as ‘Briggsy’ by his friends and teammates, signed with the Wilmington Hammerheads in 2009, he was voted team MVP while leading the squad to the 2009 USL Second Division regular season title, which resulted in one the most successful seasons for the Hammerheads franchise.
“Mark has a wealth of experience,” affirms Hammerheads Head Coach David Irving. “He loves the game and it’s that time in his career if he wants to stay in the game to expand and take on a coaching position. I’m glad he is here to help me and his teammates.”
Prior to returning to the Hammerheads in 2012, Briggs signed for Mosta of the Maltese First Division and was later announced to be on loan to the Charleston Battery for the remainder of the season. Briggs is well traveled and highly experienced in the sport. Since the beginning of his professional career, the Englishman has not only played with leagues in the United States and Malta, but in Denmark and England as well.
