EWING, NJ - The Long Island Rough Riders earned a 1-0 victory against the New Jersey Wildcats on the road on Thursday evening and now sit atop the Northeast Division standings. After two narrow losses, the Rough Riders bounced back against their division rival with Kaila Sciascia's 64th minute goal enough to separate the two sides.
Intense from the start, both teams were eager to get the victory and secure first place in the Northeast Division. The first half was a defensive struggle as Vaila Barsley made some key stops across the Rough Riders' back line.
In the 35th minute, the Wildcats came close with a shot off the corner, but Rough Rider goalkeeper Lucy Gillette made a great save, keeping the game scoreless.
The momentum shifted early in the second half, with Grace Hawkins passing the ball through to Kaila Sciascia. Sciascia made no mistake and slotted past Sandiford to put the Rough Riders up 1-0.
The Rough Riders kept the pressure and almost doubled their lead but the goal was called back due to offsides. The Wildcats did everything they could to try to score late in stoppage, but Rough Riders defense held firm for the 1-0 victory.
"It was a hard fought battle from the start and we needed this win," said Long Island Rough Riders Vice-President Flavio Ferri. "Now the pressure is to hold onto the division lead."
The Rough Riders next play at Cy Donnelly Stadium on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. ET as they take on the New York Magic.
