THUNDER BAY, Ontario -- The Thunder Bay Chill hit the road this weekend in an all-Canadian rematch in Winnipeg, Manitoba against WSA Winnipeg. The Chill are coming off a home sweep of the St. Louis Lions this past weekend and sit atop of the PDL's Heartland Division with 15 points.
The Chill swept WSA Winnipeg on May 25th and 26th by scores of 5-0 and 1-0, and are 5-1-0 lifetime against WSA, who are in their second year in the PDL.
For Saturday night’s game (8 p.m. ET) the Chill will be without forward Juan Velez who has four goals and four assists to his credit this season in six games as a result of an ejection for two cautions in the Chill’s last outing against St. Louis last Saturday night. Velez is expected to play in Sunday’s matinee affair (2 p.m. ET).
The Chill have scored 16 goals in six games, and only surrendered two, “but it will be very difficult to score against WSA” said head coach Tony Colistro. “They play very tight defensively and all their games except for two have been very close”. Colistro needs to get two wins in Winnipeg to stay atop of the division, with the Des Moines Menace and Springfield Demize both one point back in the standings. Even though the Chill have the division lead, now is not the time to get complacent. “Every game we have to play better; we have a long way to go,” Colistro said.
Thunder Bay’s Sullivan Silva, who has five goals and 12 points this season, scored the game-winning goal on Saturday against the Lions, but the defensive part of the Chill’s game has allowed only two goals against in six games. Keeping a clean sheet is an important part of the Chill game, with Stephen Paterson having earned four shutouts in five games this season. Karl Gouabe, the Chill’s second keeper earned a shutout in his only outing this year.
