WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads will host the Richmond Kickers at Legion Stadium on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. with the determination to continue their home winning streak. This will be the second encounter the Hammerheads will have with the Kickers this season, followed by another on July 7th, again at Legion Stadium.
When the Hammerheads and Kickers met last on May 26th at City Stadium, the Kickers prevented a draw with the Hammerheads by scoring two goals in stoppage time, claiming a 3-1 victory. The Hammerheads are coming off a successful road trip from the northeast over the past weekend, taking a 1-1 draw with Rochester and a 2-0 victory over Harrisburg to gain four points in the league standings.
This road trip earned Hammerheads goalkeeper Alex Horwath top honors and being selected as USL PRO’s Player of the Week for his 10-save shutout against Harrisburg. Hammerheads teammates Paul Nicholson and Andriy Budnyy were also named to the Team of the Week for their goal-scoring performances, with Corey Hertzog listed as an honorable mention.
After moving into the playoff positions with their good road weekend, the Hammerheads will now try to move past the Kickers and into fourth place in the USL PRO standings. Richmond currently sits in fourth place in the division, one point ahead of the Hammerheads.
UPCOMING GAMES
The Wilmington Hammerheads will take on the Los Angeles Blues on Saturday, June 30 at Legion Stadium, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. The theme for game night is “Military Night”, and is sponsored by the new Whole Foods Market of Wilmington.
In celebration of the 4th of July and to honor our troops, the Hammerheads will have a large fireworks display after the game in the backfield of Legion Stadium. As a result, backfield parking will not be available for this game. Come out and join other Hammerhead fans over food, drinks, soccer, and celebrate our great nation.
