USL PRO News Release
Tuesday, June 12, 2012
TAMPA, Fla. – USL PRO announced its Team of the Week for the 10th week of the 2012 season today, honoring Wilmington Hammerheads goalkeeper Alex Horwath as Player of the Week after a standout weekend that saw him record a 10-save shutout as Wilmington picked up four of a possible six points and moved into fifth place in the league standings.
Horwath put in a solid performance as the Hammerheads took a 1-1 draw in their opening game of the weekend against the Rochester Rhinos at Sahlen’s Stadium. It was on Saturday night in his side’s 2-0 win against the Harrisburg City Islanders that the 25-year-old former New York Red Bull had his best game of the season so far, recording a 10-save shutout.
The shutout was Horwath’s fourth of the season, and was critical as the Hammerheads defended a 2-0 halftime lead. Horwath, who played for the PDL’s Northern Virginia Royals and Kansas City Brass before turning professional, made seven saves against the City Islanders in the second half alone as Wilmington was able to return to North Carolina with its first road victory of the season.
Joining Horwath on the Team of the Week were his teammates Paul Nicholson, who had the game-tying goal against Rochester and assisted on Corey Hertzog’s finish against Harrisburg, and Andriy Budnyy, who scored what proved to be the game-winning goal against the City Islanders with a fine low finish.
Other honorees included Pittsburgh’s Darren Amoo, whose first professional goal earned his side a draw against the Dayton Dutch Lions, and Richmond’s David Bulow, who grabbed victory for the Kickers against Charlotte with his stoppage-time finish. Bulow was joined on the team by Jason Yeisley, who put in a strong performance filling in at center back with the Kickers missing Henry Kalungi to international duty and William Yomby to injury.
Orlando’s Kyle Davies and Jamie Watson were also selected after Watson scored the game-winning goal for the Lions in their 2-1 victory against Charleston. The Battery’s Nicki Paterson was also selected for his stunning first-half finish that gave him a league-leading six goals this season.
