OTTAWA, ON - The Ottawa Fury Women find their form of old in Saturday night's 6-1 victory against the London Gryphons at the Algonquin College Soccer Complex. Ottawa carried a 4-0 lead through the first 45 minutes of play and ran away with the 6-1 win that saw Ottawa get offense from five different goalscorers and seven players register a point.
With the win The Fury Women extend their remarkable home unbeaten streak to 27 games (25-0-2) and gain ground on division-leader Toronto which lost against Quebec City.
Ottawa wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as it pressured London early and Melissa Busque headed the Fury into the early lead in the secod minute, knocking home the corner kick from Kelly Conheeney. Eighteen minutes later Conheeney netted her first goal of the season picking up a lose ball inside the 18-yard box and blasting Ottawa into a two-goal lead.
Two minutes later the Fury offensive trio that dominated teams last season struck as Mallory Outerbirdge, Jessica Shufelt and Busque lead 3-on-1 rush for the Fury that saw Busque net her second of the game as Ottawa took an early 3-0 lead. In the 30th minute the Fury's effective conversion of set pieces continued as Gillian Baggott headed home another Conheeney corner as Ottawa carried a 4-0 lead into halftime.
Last Saturday, Jasmine Phillips equaled Taryn Swiatek's club record for career shutouts at 16, and while the first 45 minutes made it seem like the record would be broken, the Gryphons dashed any hope of Phillips reaching the record as they tallied early in the second half. A great through ball from Liz Hildebrandt found Emily Tustin who split the Fury defence and volleyed Phillips who had come off her line.
Determined to respond, Fury midfielder Katrina Gorry took matters into her own hands beating the entire Gryphons team down the right side before sending the ball back through to Kaitlin Ryan, who blasted her first in Fury colours past Rebecca Singer in the London goal to restore Ottawa's four-goal lead.
After going her first three games without a goal, reigning W-League MVP Outerbirdge finally shook the monkey off her back as Shufelt spotted her in space and Outerbridge showed her finish of old and slotted home Ottawa's sixth goal in the 62 minute.
The Fury Women will travel to Quebec City on Wednesday (June 13) to face the Quebec City Amiral (2-0-0).
