TAMPA, Fla. – Hundreds of participants are set to flock to Daytona Beach, Fla. this weekend for USL’s Major Beach Soccer tournament, the first of three to take place this summer. Games are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, with age groups ranging from U-12 to adult. Featuring more than 400 players, MBS Daytona Beach will have everything one should expect from a beach soccer tournament and more, with the party on the beach coming second to what is at stake: qualifying positions at the MBS National Championships in Clearwater Beach, Fla.
Major Beach Soccer/Soccer on the Beach is in its 22nd year of bringing the top beach soccer tournament action to Florida’s shores. In 2012, 76 teams will qualify to compete at the MBS National Championships scheduled for Clearwater Beach in December.
Co-ed Open, boys, and girls (U14-U18) teams will qualify by winning their divisions at qualifying events or through point accumulation from playing at multiple events. The inaugural MBS National Championship brought the nation’s top beach soccer talent to Clearwater Beach in December of 2011.
“We have greatly enhanced our Daytona Beach event this year thanks to the support of the Daytona Beach Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the local community,” USL National Technical Director and Major Beach Soccer Director Peter Mellor said. “We’re excited to be back for our 16th year in Daytona Beach.”
The expansive white sands of Daytona Beach offers the perfect venue for beach soccer, with teams competing five-on-five in 30-minute games with prizes for champions and runners-up in all age groups. Flicks and acrobatic bicycle kicks are the norm in beach soccer, where the fields and goals are small but the action is nonstop. Remember, no shoes allowed!
Situated behind the famous Mayan Inn, MBS Daytona will take over the beach with six fields of beach soccer action and a weekend full of parties and entertainment for the entire family. MBS Daytona Beach is supported by Umbro, ChillZone LLC of Daytona, TGI Signage Systems, Farpost Soccer Company, the Daytona Beach Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, and Volusia County.
Thanks to a renewed partnership, Soccer in the Sand adds eight additional qualifying tournaments for the MBS National Championship, in addition to existing MBS events in Daytona Beach, Fort Myers Beach, Fla. and Clearwater Beach. Soccer in the Sand will host events in Seaside, Ore., Grand Haven, Mich., Los Angeles, Calif., Cleveland, Ohio, Chicago, Ill., Michigan City, Ind., and New York City, with the Huntington Beach, Calif. event having already been completed.
