LUDLOW, Mass. -- The Western Mass Pioneers will travel to Foley Stadium in Worcester on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. aiming to avenge the loss handed to them by the Worcester Hydra a little more than a week ago.
The Pioneers fell to the Hydra by a score of 1-0 on May 26th. Both teams played a physical game and the rematch should bring some excitement on the field. While the Pioneers had the better of the play in the first meeting, outshooting the Hydra 9-3, the club's goal-scoring issues prevented it from taking victory as Worcester goalkeeper Jose Silva recorded five saves.
“We dominated the first four games of the season, controlling the ball, but we only have come away with two goals total,” said head coach Federico Molinari. “I am confident we will start putting the ball in the back of the net.”
If it was not for the inclement weather and poor field conditions at Lusitano Stadium this past Saturday forcing a postponement, this match would have been the third consecutive match against the Hydra in 12 days. The new date for Saturday's has yet to be determined.
“Maybe the game postponement is a blessing in disguise to get us back on the winning track,” said General Manager Greg Kolodziey. “Playing the same team three times in a season is tough enough and we were looking at playing Worcester three games in a row.”
The Pioneers will be back in action on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Lusitano Stadium as they host another PDL newcomer, the CFC Azul. The game is sponsored by Big Y World Class Markets, which will be giving away prizes and samples of food from the local Big Y stores.
