Saturday June 2, 2012

OTTAWA, Ont. - The Ottawa Fury Women rebounded from their first loss in 18 games with a 2-0 victory against the Rochester Ravens in the Fury’s Home Opener at the Algonquin College Soccer Complex. Set pieces won the game for the Fury with Courtney Maitland and Ottawa native Gillian Baggott each scoring from corner kicks. Jasmine Phillips, who posted the shutout, is now tied with Taryn Swiatek as the club’s all-time shutout leader with 16.

The opening 30 minutes were reminiscent of the last time the two sides met in Rochester this past Saturday. Both team battled for possession in the midfield, but it was Ottawa that owned a majority of the chances with both Gillian Baggott and Katie Ryan hitting the crossbar off corner kicks.

The Fury finally broke through in the 34th minute when Kelly Conheeney’s corner kick went off several players inside the six-yard box and landed at the feet of Maitland, who slotted home her first of the season giving Ottawa the lead. Katrina Gorry was all over the pitch on Saturday making well-timed runs, hard challenges and creating chances for several scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates. Reigning W-League MVP Mallory Outerbridge hit the outside of the post as the half drew to a close, but was denied her first goal of the season as the Fury carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second half saw the Fury settle down and have a much more control in the midfield, but several passes still went mistimed. One area where they continued to thrive was on corner kicks and in the 70th minute Baggott headed home her first career W-League goal much to the delight of the home fans that included her friends and family.

As the time ticked down Dom Oliveri gave his local players, all graduates of the Fury Youth Academy, their first W-League minutes with Lauren Hughes, Melisa Erturk, Marrisa Duguay and Abbey Lindblad all seeing time. The Fury Women extended their home unbeaten streak to 26-games (24-0-2).

The Fury Women will next be in action on Saturday, June 9 when they face the London Gryphons at 7 p.m.
