TAMPA, Fla. – The W-League announced its Team of the Week for Week 3 of the 2012 season today, honoring Hamilton FC Rage goalkeeper Genevieve Richard as Player of the Week. Richard recorded a seven-save shutout as the Rage recorder their first victory against Ottawa on Sunday, ending the Fury’s 17-game regular season unbeaten streak. Richard also backstopped a 1-0 victory against Rochester on May 23.
Also highlighting the squad is Virginia Beach striker Esther Anyanwu, who recorded a pair of goals, an assist and nine shots in her side’s 3-1 victory against the Dayton Dutch Lions, and Charlotte Lady Eagles striker Erin Wingo, who tallied a goal and two assists vs. Central SC. Gabrielle Galanti helped the New Jersey Rangers bounce back with a pair of goals in her team’s win against the New York Magic, while D.C. United Women forward Mikaela Howell earned her place on the Team of the Week with a goal, assist and six shots in a 3-0 victory against Northern Virginia.
Howell’s teammate Molly Menchel also earned a spot by leading a D.C. United backline that didn’t allow a shot against the Majestics. Joining her on defense is Seattle’s Victoria Frederick, who assisted on the game-winning goal against Vancouver, and Laval’s Cindy Walsh, who helped her side limit opponents to a single goal in two games.
Brittany Bock of the Colorado Rush leads the midfield trio after her two goals helped the Rush down Victoria. She is joined by Atlanta’s Rebecca Nolin, who was dominant in the air and controlled the attack in a 4-1 victory against VSI Tampa, and Santa Clarita’s Nadia Link, whose goal helped the Blue Heat down the LA Strikers 4-1.
