WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wimlington Hammerheads are pleased to announce that forward Corey Hertzog, 21, will join the club on loan from Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls until June 30th, 2012. Hertzog was selected by the Red Bulls as a member of MLS’s Generation Adidas for the 2011 season – 13th overall in the MLS SuperDraft. He has not yet made his first team appearance for the Red Bulls in 2012.
Playing for Penn State University during his college career, Hertzog recorded 20 goals and 46 points in the 2010 NCAA Division I season, leading the nation. He also played in the PDL for Reading United, where he had four goals in eight games in 2010.
With the Hammerheads currently suffering from multiple injuries, Coach David Irving thinks it is a good opportunity for Hertzog to receive playing time. “He is hungry to play”, Irving said. “He knows where the goal is and he is a goal scorer.”
Irving knew of Hertzog with the help of two former New York Red Bulls, now Wilmington Hammerheads teammates, goalkeeper Alex Horwath and defender Tyler Lassiter. Both played alongside Hertzog during the 2011 season with the Red Bulls.
“Both had good things to say about him,” Irving said. “He is overall a nice guy.”
Having two former teammates on the field with him has allowed Hertzog to adapt quickly and comfortably into his new role as a Hammerheads forward. Hertzog’s first appearance with the Hammerheads came this past Saturday against the Richmond Kickers where he saw 28 minutes of playing time and had two shots on goal.
