HAMILTON, Ont. - There were a lot of firsts that came out of Sunday’s game against the Hamilton FC Rage, unfortunately for the Fury none of them were in their favor. After a scoreless first half Hamilton netted a pair of second-half goals to carry the Rage to a 2-0 victory, their first against Ottawa.
The loss for Ottawa also marks the team’s first regular season loss since July 4, 2010 ending its 17-game unbeaten streak (now 15-1-2 in their past 18 regular season games).
For the most part it was an uneventful first half in Sunday afternoon’s clash between the Fury and the Hamilton as there were plenty of action back and forth through the midfield, but no chances on goal early. Both sides made mild threats on set pieces, but neither Jasmine Phillips or Genevieve Richard were beaten for their respective sides, sending the two teams into the dressing rooms scoreless at the half.
The second half started much the same way as the first half finished, again seeing both teams jockeying for position. It wasn’t until the 59th and 60th minutes when Ottawa came close as reigning W-League MVP Mallory Outerbridge earned two great chances, but was denied both times by Richard, who earned the clean sheet in the Hamilton goal.
In the 63rd minute Phillips tackled a Hamilton player earning the Rage a penalty and Christina Thornton made no mistake, giving the home side the lead. Hamilton almost doubled its lead in the 74th minute but Haillie Price headed the corner over the bar to keep it close. In the 80th minute Hamilton secured the win as Angelika Uremavich got on the end of a great ball from Christabel Oduro beating Phillips and sending the Fury to a shocking 2-0 defeat at McMaster University.
The Fury will have until Saturday to regroup as they prepare to host the Rochester Ravens as part of the club’s home-opening weekend on June 2 at 3 p.m. at the Algonquin College Soccer Complex.
