HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Harrisburg City Islanders kicked off the Memorial Day weekend with three points as they defeated the Rochester Rhinos 1-0 as Morgan Langley's second goal of the season earned his side a 1-0 victory at Skyline Sports Complex. The defeat was Rochester's first this season, and moved the City Islanders into fourth place in the USL PRO standings, tied on points with the third-placed Charleston Battery.
Both sides had opportunities to take the lead in the first half, but the better opportunities fell to the City Islanders (3-1-3) as they had five first-half shots. Sainey Touray saw a shot in the 16th minute slide just wide of the left post, and Langley had a good opportunity blocked out for a corner by a sliding challenge by Rhinos defender Troy Roberts.
The City Islanders broke through three minutes after the halftime break as JT Noone found space on the left side to float a cross to the far post. Langley was on hand to head home as his effort just eluded a full-stretch Nicht, who got a hand to the header but was unable to keep it from crossing the line.
The Rhinos' (6-1-1) best chances came from set pieces, but they were unable to take advantage of their chances, either just missing the target, or being denied by City Islanders goalkeeper Nick Noble. The shutout was the City Islanders' fourth in a row in all competitions.
Rochester will next face the Dayton Dutch Lions on Saturday night at Miami Valley South Stadium at 7:30 p.m. in a game that can be seen on USLNation.com. The City Islanders, meanwhile, continue their home stand on Tuesday night as they host Major League Soccer's New England Revolution in a third round tie of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
