FRESNO, Calif. – With games next week in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Provo and Ogden, Utah, the Fresno Fuego are first getting ready to square off against the Orange County Blue Star on Friday night at Chukchansi Park for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The match is presented by Freeway Insurance, the Auto Insurance Experts, and the first 1,000 fans will receive a vuvuzela. The Fuego, 3-0-1 in PDL competition, are coming off a 1-1 tie against the same Blue Star this past Friday in Irvine, Calif. Paul Islas scored the lone Fuego goal to earn his side a point after being behind at halftime.
On Tuesday night, the Fuego defeated the Turlock Express 2-0 in the first round of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Midfielder Abraham Campos scored both goals for the Fuego. After Friday’s home game against the Blue Star, the Fuego will meet the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in Florida next Tuesday in the second round of the Open Cup, with a game against Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes waiting for the winner in the third round on Tuesday, June 29.
Following the trip the Florida, the Fuego will go back to PDL play on Thursday and Saturday in Utah for games against the Ogden Outlaws and BYU Cougars, respectively.
Fuego midfielder Alex Caceres and forward Paul Islas are currently tied with Carlos De Araujo of the Ocala Stampede for first place in total points (8) in the PDL. Islas and Araujo also lead the league in goals, with three apiece.
