TAMPA, Fla. – The 2010 Super Y-League season was a memorable one for the Ironbound SC U16 boys. Ironbound edged Mountain FC to claim the first Super Y-League North American Finals trophy for the powerhouse Garden State club. This Saturday, the core of that championship side will return looking to add a U17 title to their trophy case when they kick off the 2011 SYL season Saturday vs. Rage SC.
“They’re excited to go back and defend their title,” said John Soares, Ironbound SC Director of Operations. “[Other teams] will be using them as a measuring stick this season.”
With a talented core of players, the Ironbound U17 side certainly looks to be the class of the Mid-Atlantic Division. Forward Almir Batista, midfielder Lucas Terci, defender Evan Marques, and goalkeeper Ryan Baird were all Super Y-League U16 North American Finals All-Tournament Team selections, and each is returning this season looking to defend their title.
After a long winter, this Ironbound side is just looking forward to getting out and playing some soccer.
“They’re excited to just get out there and play,” Soares said. “They just played a tournament in March so they’re beginning to get into form.”
Ironbound will test that form against Rage SC, also a North American Finals participant.
Down the New Jersey turnpike, another club is looking for redemption. The New Jersey Stallions U14 boys lost in the 2010 championship match, 6-5 on penalty kicks, against the Chicago Magic. After a stellar season, capped by a heartbreaking ending, the Stallions are aiming to reverse their fortunes in the U15 division this season. The Stallions will also begin their 2011 campaign Saturday as they visit TSF Academy.
Other finals participants are kicking off this weekend, as they look to climb to the summit and earn a trip back to Tampa. The Seacoast United Wanders U14 boys face off with Nordic today, the U16 girls MPS Renegades host Nordic Saturday, and the TSF U17 boys will do battle with the New Jersey Stallions Saturday.
Entering its 13th season of play, the Super Y-League is one of the premier organizations for youth development in North America. Boasting teams from coast to coast across the United States and Canada, hundreds of teams will do battle this season for the right to earn the title of Super Y-League North American champion.
