RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to welcome Orlando City to Richmond City Stadium this Saturday to kick off the 2011 USL PRO season. In support of the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams and their historic trip to the NCAA Final Four, the Richmond Kickers have changed the game time to 4 p.m., resulting from the scheduled tip off time between the VCU Rams and the Butler Bulldogs at 6:09 p.m. Fans wearing black and gold can purchase tickets for just $4 at the gate and Papa John’s will continue to celebrate the Rams’ success by offering pizzas at the stadium for $4.
“To face Orlando in our home opener is an ideal situation,” said Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Head Coach and Director of Soccer. “Their impressive preseason performances against MLS teams show why they are considered one of the favorites to win USL PRO this year. We expect a very tough first game and are looking forward to the challenge.”
Complimentary Richmond Kickers Youth Pro Passes (ages 3-17) are available, for a limited time only, at locations throughout Richmond such as Union First Market Bank, nTelos Wireless, Soccer Post, SCOR, Strictly Soccer, RoomStore World and Crossridge Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. After a successful preseason that saw the Kickers go 4-0 against local college and professional teams, the regular season officially opens this weekend when Richmond’s hometown team hosts league powerhouse Orlando City for the highly anticipated USL PRO season opener.
Last season, the Richmond Kickers earned their eighth league championship appearance with a decisive 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the USL Second Division Semifinals. The Kickers finished the regular season with a record of 9-5-6 and 33 points, five points behind Charleston who earned a bye and the right to host the title match, edging the Kickers 2-1 for the Championship.
Expansion franchise Orlando City travel to Richmond after an intense preseason schedule saw the Lions go 5-2, including an impressive 2-1 record against Major League Soccer teams Philadelphia Union, FC Dallas and Toronto FC.
