WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Worcester Hydra FC recently signed 11 additional college players for the club’s inaugural season in the PDL. The new signings are Boston College’s Chris Ager, Colin Murphy, pictured, and Nick Corliss, Boston University’s Michael Bustamante, Anthony Ciccone, Derek McCaffrey and Taylor Washington, Central Connecticut State University’s Stephen Walmsley, Merrimack College’s Evan Burokas, UMass Lowell’s Matheus Candido and Quinnipiac University’s Brett Uttley.
Ager, Murphy and Corliss, all defenders, helped lead the Eagles to a 14-6-1 record in 2011 that included a top 15 national ranking and an NCAA Tournament appearance. The BC defense ranked third in the ACC in goals against average (1.21) and shutouts (7) this past fall. A native of Gjettum, Norway, Ager was named to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Third Team and the All-ACC Second Team.
Murphy, of Onehunga, New Zealand, has tallied 16 career points on three goals and 10 assists. He helped lead New Zealand to the Oceania Football Confederation Under-20 Championship in April 2011. Murphy also played for his country in the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Corliss, a transfer to BC from the University of Louisville, hails from Auckland, New Zealand. In his two seasons at Louisville, the Cardinals went a combined 33-4-7 advancing to the NCAA Championship game in 2010 and the NCAA first round in 2009.
Bustamante, Ciccone, McCaffrey and Washington helped the Terriers claim the 2011 America East regular season championship, while Bustamante, a midfielder from Chelsea, Mass., has tallied 35 career points on six goals and 33 assists. He became just the sixth player in BU history to be named a First Team All-America East selection three times. A three-time All-New England choice, Bustamante was also tabbed a 2011 preseason All-American by collegesoccernews.com. He missed the 2011 season due to injury.
Ciccone, a midfielder from Medford, N.J., has notched six career points on a goal and four assists. He appeared in all 18 games for the Terriers in 2011.
Central Mass. native McCaffrey hails from Groton, Mass. where he starred for Groton Dunstable Regional High School in both soccer and basketball. A midfielder, he was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team in 2011. He was one of three BU players to start all 18 games and led the team in minutes played (1,531).
Washington is a defender from Somers, N.Y. In his freshman season at BU this past fall he started 14 games and scored his first collegiate goal, a game-winner, against Harvard.
Walmsley, a defender from Liverpool, England, appeared in 14 games making nine starts for the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils in his first season. He recorded his first career goal in a win over Bryant University.
A native of Auburn, Mass., and a graduate of Auburn High School, Burokas recently wrapped up his four years as a midfielder at Merrimack College. He finished with 40 career points on nine goals and 22 assists. In 2011 he was selected to play in the NEISL Senior All-Star Game. As a junior in 2010, he was named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference Second Team.
Candido, a midfielder for UMass Lowell, wrapped up his tenure this past fall with 21 career points on six goals and nine assists. The Lowell, Mass. native was named an NSCAA All-East Region Third Team selection and a Northeast-10 Second Team choice in 2011.
Uttley, a midfielder from Jamestown, RI, appeared in 13 games and made 10 starts for the Quinnipiac Bobcats in 2011. He was a NSCAA/Adidas High School All-American in 2006 and 2007 at North Kingstown High School.
