HOUSTON -- The Texas Dutch Lions FC are pleased to announce the appointment of Coach Robert Maaskant for the club's inaugural season in the USL PDL. In addition to leading the Dutch Lions' PDL team, Maaskant will also serve in an advisory role for the club's Super-20 team, and the youth program.
"Robert is for me a top trainer because he provides good soccer training and plays with good results," Dutch Lions Technical Director Cor van Hoeven said. "With his professional experience, and the way he approached training and playing soccer, he is a perfect person for the Dutch soccer school in Texas."
Maaskant played professionally in both his native Holland for FC Emmen, FC Zwolle and Excelsior Rotterdam, and in Scotland for Premier League club Motherwell. Since then he has coached numerous sides in Holland, including Willem II and NAC Breda, which he led to the knockout rounds of the UEFA Cup in 2008-09 and the final qualifying round of the Europa League in 2009-10.
He then went to Poland, where last year he led Wisla Krakow to the league championship and a place in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds.
The Dutch Lions FC kick off their inaugural season in the PDL's Mid South Division on 5 May as they host the Austin Aztex at WoodForest Stadium at 7:30 p.m. CT. The Dutch Lions are affilliated with the Dayton Dutch Lions of USL PRO.
