WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Wilmington Hammerheads kick off the home portion of their 2012 USL PRO season this Saturday night with their Home Opener against the Harrisburg City Islanders. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Legion Stadium. The Hammerheads are looking to bounce back following their 4-1 loss against Orlando City last Sunday.
“Obviously, following the game last Sunday, we need to get our first win of the season at home versus Harrisburg,” said Hammerheads head coach David Irving.
Harrisburg's 2011 season saw the City Islanders reach the USL PRO Championship Game, where they fell in a penalty shootout to Orlando City. Last season, the Hammerheads faced off with the City Islanders twice and swept the series, beating them 3-1 at home and 2-1 away.
Whilst not having a team in 2010, the Hammerheads had an outstanding 2011 season. The club's second-place regular season finish last year has led to high expectations for the team this season.
Eyes will be on Hammerheads newcomer, midfielder Bryce Taylor, who scored the first goal of his professional career last week against Orlando City in the 56th minute. He is looking to follow up with an additional goal or more in Saturday’s game against the City Islanders.
With the first home game of the 2012 season approaching, fans at Legion Stadium can look forward to seeing returning Hammerhead players (Paul Nicholson, Tom Parratt, Tyler Polak, Gareth Evans, Andres Cuero, Andriy Budnyy, Hakop Avesyan, Dylan Riley and Manny Guzman) and former 2009 Hammerhead standout, Mark Briggs.
UPCOMING GAMES
The Wilmington Hammerheads will host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday, April 28 at Legion Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., with the theme for game night being “College Night” sponsored by IHop. Come out representing your favorite college team.
