The W-League’s D.C. United Women are taking part in the Inaugural Headers For Hope tournament that will be held on Saturday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown. D.C. United will be featured in the day’s showcase match against the University of Maryland at 6:30 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex Stadium. Admission for the game is $10.

This weekend of college soccer will enable coaches and players an opportunity to play spring matches against some of the best college soccer programs in the country while also providing teams the chance to make a difference off the field in the lives of people affected by cancer.

“Louise Waxler has been a pioneer in raising money with soccer events to fight cancer, and we’re honored to do what we can to help,”  D.C. United Women General Manager Chris Hummer said. “It’s early in our pre-season, before we get our big college signings with us, so the game is also a great chance to provide younger players like U-17 U.S. National Teamer Andi Sullivan [who just committed to us for the summer] time against a great opponent like Maryland. It will be a real test, but good for us in the long run.”

The tournament will consist of two, 70-minute games per team, with participating teams asked to donate/raise $1,000.  Participating teams include the D.C. United Women, the College of William and Mary, the University of Maryland, the U.S. Naval Academy, Villanova University, Loyola University, the NY Fury and the Maryland Capitols.

Headers for Hope was established in honor of every individual who has been diagnosed with cancer; every family member who has held the hand of their loved one being treated for cancer; and all friends acting as a support system to someone who has been told the news they have cancer. Unfortunately, cancer more often than not hits home which means this organization was established for you.

Founder of Headers For Hope and long-time soccer sports industry veteran Louise Waxler created the Foundation in loving memory of her good friend who passed away after her two-year battle with this deadly disease. By combining her passion for sports and her passion for helping those win their fight against cancer, Headers For Hope was born.

Headers For Hope works with tournaments and teams across the country and within each sport to raise money, which is donated back to their local cancer charity or organization. Funds raised and donated in the name of Headers For Hope will help to assist communities improve the cancer experience of those affected with this life challenge.
