Goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski has signed with VPS of the Finnish Veikausliiga. The excellent player and fan favorite will be missed on City Island in 2011 but an opportunity came up for him that was just too good to pass.
After finishing the 2010 USL-2 season on a high note with multiple solid performances Tomer joined the Philadelphia Union after the Isles Guys season ended. He trained with the MLS club for a lengthy period and planned on being back in Harrisburg for 2011 when he was approached by a team in Finland. After a successful one week trial they offered him a deal and he took it. VPS coach Tommi Pikkarainen had this to say about Tomer, "We saw things fall into place with Tomer very quickly". Chencinski will compete for the #1 GK position on the team. "He has brought in needed competition within the team" says Pikkarainen.
It will be sad to see him leave. As a player on the field and as a person off the field he is a great guy. Tomer has taken time out of his busy and well traveled schedule to fill us in on the details of the transaction and deliver a special message to the fans of the City Islanders. I think the text below shows what a class act he is and I hope we can see him return one day to Skyline Sports Complex.
