HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Harrisburg City Islanders have announced the signing of defender Tom Brandt for the 2012 season. Brandt joins the Islanders after a standout career at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a three-year starter and received First-Team All-Ivy recognition in both his junior and senior seasons. He totaled 11 goals and 23 assists over his four-year career.
Despite being positioned on the backline, Brandt demonstrated a unique scoring touch his senior year, tying for second on the team with five goals, despite putting just five shots on goal. He served as a team captain for both his junior and senior seasons and received NSCAA All-Region honors for both of these years. The highlight of his time at Penn came during his senior season, when Brandt scored all three goals in a double-overtime win over Harvard, earning Ivy League Player of the Week honors, Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week honors, and CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week recognition.
“I’m excited to join the Islanders and battle for a championship this season," Brandt said. "There are a lot of quality players on our roster and I’m looking forward to competing with this group of guys against the rest of the league. The opportunity to play soccer at this level and with this organization is something I am very grateful to have. We will up in another week of hard work and then be ready for the season opener against Charlotte.”
Brandt returns to the Harrisburg area, where he enjoyed similar success at Palmyra High School. He was a two-time captain and four-year starter, leading the team to a Pennsylvania State title in 2007. He was a two-time All-Lebanon County first team selection and, as a senior, received NSCAA/Adidas High School Boys All-Region II honors, while being named Mid Penn Keystone Player of the Year.
Brandt and the City Islanders will begin their 2012 campaign on Friday, April 20 in North Carolina where they will travel to take on the Charlotte Eagles. They will open their home portion of the regular season against Charlotte on Saturday, May 4.
