CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Eagles kick off their 2012 USL PRO season on Saturday night against the 2011 Champions, Orlando City. The game will be held at Charlotte Christian Stadium at 7 p.m.
The Eagles completed a successful preseason undefeated. Notable results included a 2-1 victory against the Carolina Railhawks and a 2-1 victory against the Atlanta Silverbacks. The Eagles also had the priviledge of kicking off their preseason with a 2-2 draw against 2011 Division I Championship finalist, UNC-Charlotte.
There are 14 returning players with the Eagles, among them goalkeeper Eric Reed and midfielders Chris Salvaggione, Josh Rife and Jorge Herrera. Additions such as Mauricio Salles, from Brazil, Milton Blanco, who was the 2011 USL PDL Most Valuable Player with the Fresno Fuego, and Brad Stisser, who arrives from the Rochester Rhinos, will hopefully add to the team’s quality.
The Eagles have been denied a playoff berth the past two years. Last season the Eagles lost out on a playoff place after losing to rivals, the Charleston Battery in the last match of the 2011 regular season. Needless to say Charlotte is hungry for a post season run in 2012.
Orlando returns this year as the team to beat, led by 2011 captain and USL PRO Goalkeeper of the Year, Miguel Gallardo, 2011 Defender of the Year, Rob Valentino and new acquisition John Rooney, younger brother of Manchester United’s talisman Wayne Rooney.
