TAMPA, Fla. – The hottest action on the sand returns this summer when USL’s Major Beach Soccer kicks off its 2012 summer tournament series June 8-10 at Daytona Beach, Fla.. MBS Daytona Beach will feature more than 800 beach soccer players enjoying the sun and sand on Daytona Beach while competing with their teams for a spot at the MBS National Championship.
Major Beach Soccer is in its 22nd year of bringing the top beach soccer tournament action to Florida’s shores. Registration is now open at www.majorbeachsoccer.com for this year’s tournaments in Daytona Beach, Clearwater Beach (July 13-15) and Fort Myers Beach (August 4-5).
“Major Beach Soccer is excited to continue its role as a leader in beach soccer development in the U.S., and we can’t wait to kick off our 2012 summer series which will conclude with the MBS National Championship at the pristine beach soccer sand and environment of Clearwater Beach,” MBS Director Peter Mellor said. “With the 2012 MBS National Championship scheduled to feature qualifiers from all age groups, we’re looking forward to having 76 teams competing for championships.”
For the second consecutive year, teams participating at the three events will compete for a spot at the Major Beach Soccer National Championship on Clearwater Beach in December. Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Co-ed Open and boys and girls (U14-U18) teams may qualify by winning their divisions at qualifying events or through point accumulation from playing at multiple events. The inaugural MBS National Championship brought the nation’s top beach soccer talent to Clearwater Beach in December of 2011, with Florida Beach Soccer FC capturing the men’s title and the Peace Passers taking home the women’s crown.
MBS has renewed its partnership with Soccer in the Sand, adding eight additional qualifying tournaments for the MBS National Championship that will take place throughout the months of June, July and August. Soccer in the Sand will host events in Huntington Beach, Calif., Seaside, Ore., Grand Haven, Mich., Los Angeles, Calif., Cleveland, Ohio, Chicago, Ill., New York City and one additional site to be named.
Major Beach Soccer events feature teams competing five-on-five in 30-minute games with prizes for champions and runners-up in all age groups. Flicks and acrobatic bicycle kicks are the norm in beach soccer, where the fields and goals are small but the action is nonstop. MBS is supported by Umbro and TGI Signage Systems.
