BOYDS, Md. -- Women's professional soccer is returning to the Maryland SoccerPlex this summer, as D.C. United Women take on the Boston Breakers on Saturday, May 12 in a preseason exhibition.

The arrival of the Breakers represents the first return of a women's professional soccer team to the Washington, D.C. region since the end of the 2010 season. The match is expected to mark the return of former local D.C. favorite Cat Whitehill, fellow U.S. international Leslie Osborne, and the Australian Women's National Team duo of Kyah Simon and Tameka Butt, who competed with Australia at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany.

"We are looking forward to a great game with D.C. United Women, as we both prepare for the upcoming season," said Lisa Cole, Head Coach of the Breakers, "We can't wait to play at the Maryland SoccerPlex again, it's one of the best women's soccer venues around, and the fans are always supportive of the game."

For D.C. United Women, the match precedes the start of their second season in the USL W-League, which they kick off the following Saturday, hosting the Virginia Beach Piranhas at 7 p.m. on May 17.

"We have a very exciting team coming together for our second season at the SoccerPlex," said team owner Bill Lynch. "We can't think of a better way to kick off the year than hosting the return of a women's professional soccer team at what we believe is the best women's soccer venue in the country."

The May 12 exhibition match takes place barely a week after United Women are scheduled to complete their roster following the release of several top players from their college duties. Several of the nation's top collegiate players from schools like Maryland, Virginia, Penn State and reigning NCAA national champion Stanford will join an impressive cast of former professionals and others in pursuit of a W-League championship in just their second year of existence.

The match is being sponsored by the Washington Area Girls Soccer League (WAGS), one of the oldest and most prestigious all-girls youth soccer leagues in the country. United Women are also donating $1 per ticket to Headers for Hope, a national charity dedicated to fighting cancer and supporting its victims and their families.

"Supporting and promoting the game of soccer for girls and women is part of our league charter," said WAGS President Kathie Diapoulis. "In addition to our season-long sponsorship of D.C. United Women, we jumped at the chance to help bring WPS back to our own backyard."

With the return of so many recognized professional players, and the support of WAGS, ticket sales are expected to be brisk. Single-game general seating tickets go on sale to today, however with strong season ticket interest, VIP seating is presently only available through season ticket purchases. United Women may release single-game VIP seating at a later date - depending on capacity.
