PORTLAND, Maine -- Two former Global Premier Soccer players have recently put pen to paper and signed contracts in Major League Soccer (MLS). After competing for the GPS Portland Phoenix in the USL PDL last season, Bryan Gaul and Aaron Schoenfeld have been signed by the LA Galaxy and Columbus Crew respectively.
“It comes as no surprise that Aaron and Bryan have signed contracts in Major League Soccer after excelling during their time playing as part of the GPS organization in,” said GPS Portland Phoenix Head Coach Paul Baber. “At GPS we pride ourselves on preparing our players for the next levels of the game and we are delighted to act as conveyor belt to the MLS for both these players. At GPS we have an outstanding reputation of moving players into the professional ranks.”
Schoenfeld and Gaul follow in the footsteps of former Phoenix player Ryan Thompson into the professional ranks. Thompson signed a professional deal with Irish side Shamrock Rovers who competed in the group stages on the 2011 UEFA Europa League against English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
The GPS Portland Phoenix competes in the Eastern Conference, within the Northeast Division, of the PDL against such clubs as the Ottawa Fury, Vermont Voltage and Seacoast United Phantoms. The GPS Portland Phoenix will play their first game of the new season on Saturday, May 12 when they play the Vermont Voltage, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. at Deering High School, Portland.
