CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery has signed veteran forward Salieu Bundu for the 2012 USL PRO season. Bundu joins the Battery after spending the 2011 season on loan with the Charlotte Eagles. 
A native of Bo, Sierra Leone, Bundu began his pro career in 2008 with the Cleveland City Stars. Bundu enjoyed a superb season with Cleveland scoring the winning goal in the 2008 USL2 championship game and in 2009 joined the USL1 Carolina RailHawks. Bundu spent three years with the RailHawks but was loaned out to the Charlotte Eagles during the 2011 season, where he scored seven goals in the USL PRO season.
“Adding Salieu was an important signing as we wanted to get a target striker who brings a wealth of experience to the position and our league” said Mike Anhaeuser, Battery Head Coach.
At the age of 15, Bundu fled on foot with his mother and siblings to Guinea to escape the civil war in his home country; his father was murdered by rebels. After five years of living in Guinea, Bundu’s brother won a U.S. immigrant visa in the Green Card Lottery, allowing the family to settle in the United States.
Charleston Battery players to guest bartend Thursday night at Mad River
Members of the Charleston Battery will be serving as ‘guest bartenders’ on Thursday night from 6-9 p.m. at Mad River Bar and Grill on Market Street in downtown Charleston. All tips and the $5 cover charge for admission will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
Battery to participate in National Reading Month
Several players from the Charleston Battery will also be on hand Thursday evening at the Sunshine House in Park West, reading to children as the Battery participated in National Reading Month.

Charleston Battery home opener – Saturday April 14
The Charleston Battery home opener is set for Saturday, April 14 at Blackbaud Stadium against the Richmond Kickers; kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The game is the official kick off celebration for the Battery’s 20th anniversary season, the team will be wearing special ‘retro ‘93’ jerseys and there will be fireworks immediately following the match.
