TUKWILA, Wash. – The Sounders Women have signed Kate Deines for the 2012 season. Deines was a four-time All Pac-10 midfielder at the University of Washington, before being drafted this last winter to Atlanta Beat of WPS. With the league’s suspension, Deines was free to rejoin the Sounders Women, where she played from 2007-2009.
“I am so excited to be reunited with a lot of the women that I had the opportunity to play with a couple years ago,” Deines said.
Her former teammate, and new coach, Michelle French said, “Kate has been successful on every level from club soccer with Eastside FC, high school with Issaquah HS, collegiately at UW, and with the youth national team programs. My hope is that the Sounders Women team will give her the platform to continue to grow and excel on a professional level. We are so fortunate to have an amazing local player become part of our organization.”
Like her new teammates, Alex Morgan, Hope Solo, and Sydney Leroux, Kate has represented the United States. In 2011, she competed for the United States U-23 team.
“Playing with U-23, I went to Sweden last summer for a tournament, and just like any international event it was a trip of the lifetime. We got to play Sweden and Norway, and it’s something I’ll never forget,” Deines said.
As a midfielder at Issaquah High School, Deines scored 76 goals, leading her team to four consecutive conference championships from 2005–2008 and three state titles. She was named to the all-state team four times and chosen as the state's Gatorade Player of the Year twice. During her senior year she was named a Parade All American.
At the University of Washington in Seattle, Deines was a four-year starter, starting a school-record 86 games, scoring 21 goals. She was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman First Team and was a four-time All-Pac-10 selection and a two-time NSCAA Scholar All-American.
