WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester Hydra FC has named Elvis Comrie as the club's first head coach. The Hydra enter their first season as a member of the United Soccer League’s (USL) Premier Development League (PDL) in 2012.

Comrie has enjoyed a successful career as both a collegiate coach and professional player. He spent 18 years as head men’s soccer coach at the College of the Holy Cross where he led the Crusaders to five regular season Patriot League championships and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2002. Comrie was named Patriot League Coach of the Year four times (1995, 1999, 2001, 2007) and his 125 career wins are the most ever in the history of the men’s soccer program.

As a player, Comrie was a four-year starter at the University of Connecticut where he helped lead the Huskies to a Division I NCAA national championship in 1981. He earned All-America, All-New England and All-Yankee Conference honors and was named Collegiate Player of the Year by Soccer America in 1981. Comrie ranks as the second all-time leading scorer in program history with 145 points (55 goals, 35 assists). He was inducted into the Connecticut Hall of Fame in 2005.

Comrie played professionally in the North American Soccer League, the Major Indoor Soccer League and the American Indoor Soccer Association. He was selected as an NASL All-Star as a member of the Chicago Sting in 1984 as the team captured the NASL championship. Internationally, Comrie played in France and was a member of the U.S. National Team.

“I got to know coach Comrie very well when I was an assistant coach at Holy Cross,” said Dmitri Strunkin, Hydra managing director. “His passion for the game is unmatched and contagious. His tactical knowledge and understanding of soccer is as deep as it is vast and his ability to recruit the best players will help our club field the best roster possible. I look forward to our first season with Elvis at the helm.”

“Elvis is one of the best coaches around and we’re lucky to have him on board,” added Hydra President Phong Le.

The Hydra will host their second tryout on Saturday, March 10 from 1-4 p.m. at Alumni Field, located at Becker College (Leicester campus). Interested players must register for the tryout at www.HydraFC.com.

The inaugural season kicks off on Saturday, May 5 against the Seacoast United Phantoms at 7 p.m. at Commerce Bank Field at Foley Stadium. Season tickets are available now at www.HydraFC.com.
