Friday, March 2, 2012

CHARLESTON, S.C. - With two wins out of two D.C. United need just a tie or a win to ensure a third consecutive Carolina Challenge Cup championship Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium. United takes on the Columbus Crew at 5 PM in its final pre-season match. The Chicago Fire still has an outside chance to win the tournament but needs help from the Columbus Crew in addition to beating the Charleston Battery in the tournament finale at 7:15 PM.

Gates open at 4 PM on Saturday with tickets starting at just $15 with discounts for groups of ten or more; to purchase tickets, for directions or for more information please visit www.charlestonbattery.com or call (843) 971-GOAL (4625).

8,372 soccer fans have attended the first two days of the Carolina Challenge Cup setting a new combined attendance record for the first two matchdays of the tournament.

The Charleston Battery will be looking to secure a second place finish for the second consecutive year but will need to defeat the Fire to have a chance. The Battery tied Columbus Crew 2-2 in its opening match last Saturday night before falling 3-1 to D.C. United on Wednesday evening.

Charleston midfielder Jose Cuevas has scored in consecutive games for Charleston and leads the Battery offense with two goals.

The Charleston Battery and the Chicago Fire played to a spirited 0-0 tie in this fixture last year in a strange match that saw three players ejected in the first half. The Battery and the Fire have met three times to date and in all three meetings neither side has managed to score a goal in regulation.
