WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads formally announce the signing of two former New York Red Bull players to their 2012 squad, defender Tyler Lassiter and goalkeeper Alex Horwath, pending USSF approval.

Lassiter, a Wake Forest, N.C. native, was drafted by the Red Bulls in the second round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. Lassiter made his debut for the Red Bulls on June 28, 2011, in a 2-1 victory against F.C. New York in the U.S. Open Cup. Two months later on August 30, New York announced that Lassiter had been loaned to the Carolina RailHawks where he played alongside current Hammerheads standout Gareth Evans.

“I'm excited to be joining the Hammerheads for their 2012 season," the 22-year-old Lassiter said. "I'm looking forward to helping Wilmington accomplish their goals and succeed beyond their achievements in 2011. After playing alongside Gareth Evans last season with the RailHawks, I know we work well together and provide a solid back line to hopefully contribute to many shutouts this season.”

Lassiter played four years of college soccer at North Carolina State University where he appeared in 73 games and notched 12 goals as a central defender. In his first year, Lassiter was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team. During his senior year, Lassiter led the Wolfpack offensively in goals scored (six) and assists (six) and was named to the All-ACC Second Team.

Horwath, standing at 6-foot-4-inches, signed with New York Red Bulls on March 25, 2011 and he made his first appearance for the team just one day later in a 0-0 draw against the Columbus Crew.

A Woodbine, Maryland product, Horwath was signed by Major League Soccer in April 2010. In August 2010, Horwath joined the San Jose Earthquakes to replace an injured player but after only a few weeks he joined the Seattle Sounders in October and remained with the club until the end of the season.
