HAMDEN, Conn. – Connecticut FC Azul are proud to announce the first two player commitments for the 2012 season. Midfielder Paul Templeton and goalie Greg Cumpstone will take the first two roster spots in the inaugural season.
Templeton, a native of Saltcoats, Scotland, is a red-shirt senior at Southern Connecticut State University. In his collegiate career, Templeton picked up 58 points on 24 goals and 10 assists. The SCSU star also picked up numerous awards during his time at Southern. He was named ECAC and Northeast 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2010, as well as being a two-time selection to the All-Northeast 10 team, a two-time honoree of the Northeast 10 All-Academic team and a two-time honoree of the Commissioner's honor roll.
"Paul Templeton is the first CFC Azul player we got a commitment from. There's a good reason - even though I only had the pleasure of coaching for one season at Southern, he's outstanding," Azul head coach David Kelly said. "He was an All-American at Southern and he is the kind of player that you build your team around. The fans will love him, and he will give his heart and soul for the badge."
Cumpstone is a senior at Hofstra University and has been the team's goalie for three years playing in the Colonial Athletic Association. He is second on Hofstra’s career shutout list with 16 in 40 career matches. The Killingworth, Conn. native has a career collegiate record of 16-15-7 and a save percentage of .752. He also received the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award in 2010.
"I am happy to announce that Greg Cumpstone has committed to play for the Azul this spring," Kelly said. "He is graduating from Hofstra in May. He has played in 40 NCAA DI games, logging over 3,600 minutes. He is quick, a great shot stopper, and is excellent with his feet. I know that we can rely on him to be solid back there."
Over the past three years 111 players have been drafted in the MLS SuperDraft out of the PDL, more than 70 percent of the selections.
