Battery Announce Preseason Schedule

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery will play a 10-game preseason schedule as the club prepares for the start of the USL PRO season in April. The Battery kick off their preparations with a scrimmage against the College of Charleston on February 21st then three tough matches against Major League Soccer opposition in the Carolina Challenge Cup, February 25 – March 3 at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island, S.C.

The Battery’s opening game of the tournament is at 7:15 p.m. on February 25 against the Columbus Crew. Charleston plays D.C. United on Wednesday, February 29 at 7:15 p.m. and then closes out the competition on Saturday, March 3 with a 7:15 p.m. match versus the Chicago Fire.

“We have a very strong preseason schedule along with the Carolina Challenge Cup, we will use these games to help build our team for the 2012 season” said Mike Anhaeuser, Battery Head Coach.

Following the conclusion of the Carolina Challenge Cup the Charleston Battery’s next preseason match is on Wednesday, March 7 at Coastal Carolina University. The Battery will then play a mixture of college and professional teams throughout the remainder of preseason as it sets its sights on the USL PRO opener on April 7 at the Richmond Kickers. The Battery home opener and 20th anniversary kickoff celebration is on Saturday, April 14 against the Richmond Kickers (Blackbaud Stadium, 7:30 p.m.).

Flatley returns to Battery for second season

Former College of Charleston standout defender Sean Flatley has agreed to terms and will return to play for the Charleston Battery in the 2012 USL PRO season. Flatley played eight games in 2011 (all starts) registering one assist in 750 minutes.

“Sean had a very solid first season and we look for him to build on this success in his second season with the Battery” Anhaeuser said.

A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Flatley, 6-foot-1, 185 lbs., 23 yrs., played two years at Maryland before transferring to the College of Charleston. Sean Flatley joins the Battery subject to league and USSF approval.
